Folding Screen with the Four Continents, Mexico, late 17th century, Museo de Navarra, Pamplona, Spain.
This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast includes a conversation with Los Angeles County Museum of Art curator Sofía Sanabrais, who explains one of the unlikeliest stories in early American art: How Japanese screen-painting came to influence 17th-century Mexican painting. It’s a fascinating tale!
This week’s show also features British-American sculptor Mark Handforth, whose work is on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami in the survey exhibition, “Mark Handforth: Rolling Stop.” The exhibition is on view through Feb. 19. One of his favorite ‘materials’ is lampposts, which we discuss at length on the podcast.
